We often hear our patients say that they don’t like their smile.  It usually has to do with the colour of their teeth.  We want you to feel confident showing off your pearly whites!  At Riverfront Dental we offer teeth whitening services – which one is the right one for you?

Whitening Toothpaste

There are many different types of whitening toothpaste, so you may need to spend some time searching for one that works for you.  Whitening toothpastes are for minimal staining, but they are very abrasive toothpastes, so it is not recommended to use these all the time even though they are likely your most cost-effective option.

Whitening Strips

Teeth-whitening strips are for minimal staining. They work by bleaching off surface stains. But be careful, many whitening strips contain hydrogen peroxide and can result in sensitivity of the teeth and gums after use – sometimes lasting for days! Using a sensitivity toothpaste can be helpful.

Professional Whitening

This is a service offered by Riverfront Dental and there are two levels to this service. The first is a professional home whitening kit, for minimal to moderating staining.  This requires two visits.  At your first visit, we will take impressions.  At your second visit, you will receive your trays, your whitening gel, and instructions for home use.  Our at-home whitening kits allow you to whiten on your own time, to your desired brightness.  The pro – this is a good option for whitening and if you find you have sensitivity, you can pace the process.  The con – it takes time, and some patients don’t like wearing trays.

Our second option is in-office professional whitening, for moderate to dark staining.  Your teeth will whiten approximately 2-3 shades in about 1 hour. Within 1 or two visits in the office, you’re going to notice a huge difference in the colour of your teeth.  Pro – it’s fast and effective. Con – you can experience sensitivity during and after the visit.  Our Cambridge cosmetic dentist recommend taking ibuprofen before and after your visit to help with the sensitivity.

We recommend that prior to any whitening you have a professional dental cleaning.  This will help you achieve the best results.  We also recommend that you start with a sensitivity toothpaste 2 weeks or more prior to whitening and continue using this toothpaste after whitening.
