Waterpik has a motor and pump that causes a pressurized pulsating water stream which works to remove plaque or food that is stuck in tricky places. Waterpiks are a good addition to flossing, especially for people who can’t floss (due to dexterity issues) or those who have difficult areas to reach like under bridges or around implants.  So, should you add a Waterpik to your flossing routine? Let’s find out!

The Benefits

Waterpiks are a gentler way to floss if you have sensitive gums. String floss can sometimes cause your gums to bleed.  It is important to know that bleeding happens due to inflammation of the gums secondary to the bacteria that are present between the gums and the teeth, and not the action of flossing itself.  With increased flossing regularly and better brushing techniques as well as brushing at least twice a day, the bleeding from flossing should disappear within a 2-3 week period.  During this period, the gums tighten up because they are not inflamed or irritated from the bacteria anymore. Waterpiks are best in conjunction with flossing.  We suggest flossing first and then using the Waterpik to wash away anything that could still be stuck.

Easy To Use

Those with arthritis or other dexterity issues find Waterpiks easier to use as they don’t have to work a piece of string around the mouth.  For those with mobility issues, this makes reaching the tough spots like the back of your mouth a little easier.  The same goes for larger hands, some people find it’s easier to use a Waterpik than use floss if they can’t fit their hands all the way to the back teeth!

Tips

Although people may be tempted to turn it up to full blast when they first try the Waterpik, it’s important to start low and gradually increase the power as your gums become more used to it. As they tighten up from reduced inflammation your gums gradually become less sensitive. We suggest taking a gentle approach to it at first so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.  It’s important to remember that a Waterpik is not an alternative to using a toothbrush. Using the two together ensure optimal oral health!
